Celebrating 9 years!

June 7, 2002
the night of our wedding rehearsal

July 23, 2011
Pastor and Mrs. Hatfield
grateful for the blessing of 9 years

*some things have changed, others haven't, our hearts will forever be changed and that's God's good gift to us!

I count it a blessing to be able to be celebrating 9 years (June 8) together with my fun loving, God honoring and best friend...Lucas Hatfield. It's been an incredibly good 9 years. Not good in the romantic, all is perfect sense (although there have been some romantic in it too :O)), good in the "we've been through a lot of good, bad and ugly times in the last 9 years, and we're not the same people we were when we started this adventure."

God has been transforming our hearts in the past 9 years (even before that too, but you get the idea). Finishing college, saying goodbye to sweet friends I made at Grafton Elementary, transition with friends, moving 4 times, 4 years of Seminary packed into 3 years, being live-in nannies, saying goodbye to precious relationships in TX, being a youth pastor's family for 5 years, adding 2 beautiful kids to the mix, debilitating depression for Luke, me working for a year 2 days/wk, and many other adventures in between - He's used it all! :O) The beauty of it all is that I wouldn't change a thing. Why?

God says that "He works all things out for the good of those who love the Lord." There's been so many awesome and exciting adventures we've shared, but to be honest it hasn't always felt good. Our times of trial have been when we've had to cling to the promises God has set before us and believe that He was worthy of our trust even if we didn't know the outcome. In the end of each good, bad and ugly life situation or stage, we've been able to look back and say, it is truly well with our souls because He has brought incredible good from it.

What could possibly be good through tough times you ask? Transformed hearts that are drawn closer to Jesus. He is all we need. Right now through certain circumstances, God is teaching us about what it means to draw close to Himself and be fully satisfied in Him alone. Not His blessings, not the good things this life offers but in Christ alone. He has blessed us with good things to enjoy. There's nothing wrong with enjoying God's blessings. I think it will be a life long journey of having the sensitivity of knowing when those blessings are stealing my affections from God. The question is...am I trusting the blessing or good thing to fill a hole in my soul that only God can satisfy? He reminds us that even in the trials of life we don't have to be shaken because His promises haven't changed. It's our perspective, expectations and hope in passing things that determine how we're feeling about such matters. What activity, goal, blessing am I looking to satisfy me other than Jesus?

There are so many things vying for my affections in this life. The culture and Satan wants to draw my mind and heart into meaningless and sometimes meaningful activities and goals (because then our minds are on other things other than Christ). The crazy part is the activities and goals will satisfy for a short time, and we sometimes might even be applauded for them, but as time passes we still are left feeling empty and searching for the hole to be filled. What I day dream about, facebook about, blog or spend the majority of my time on is what my heart treasures. Whoa! (Thanks for that challenge Pastor Tim!). And they can be good, well meaning things. It comes down to if my heart is trusting those good things to satisfy me, instead of God Himself.

I know the first time I heard that it hit me right between the eyes. It's so true. I know for me, my list of things in this life I treasure more than God is longer than I care to admit. I know the truth that things will steal my attention from Jesus, but I'm most shocked how willingly I live as a slave to those things knowing full well that nothing can satisfy me more than Jesus Himself.

So as Luke and I look to the next 9+ years of wedded bliss, we are trusting God to continue to strip away the layers of our self absorbed treasures in this life and draw us to His unconditional, selfless, indescribable, and inspiring love. God says in Jeremiah that "He has great plans for our lives. They are plans to prosper us and not to harm us, to give us hope and a future." I completely agree with Beth Moore and say, "I know when it's all said and done, we will want to stand on that side of glory having much rather fulfilled our calling than serving ourselves all the way to meaninglessness."

We are in the process of accepting that we were not called to an easy life, but to a purposeful life. I'm so thankful I get to be on this wild, fun and sometimes challenging adventure with a man I love and cherish, Lucas Hatfield, who spurs me on to embrace the journey and to be a better me who God has called me to be through the good, the bad and the ugly. I'm learning more and more that I've got nothing and can do nothing apart from the mighty power of the Spirit moving in my heart. We get to storm the gates of Heaven together asking for not our, but His will to be done in our lives so that honor and glory can be brought to His name alone! There is no better life than life in and with Jesus!

Monkey boy

One day when we were at the park, I looked over to find Traeger half way through the monkey bars and he wasn't looking back. My fearless son mastered the monkey bars all on his own. I was shocked! I'm not sure when he started that adventure, but by God's grace Traeger is a strong and able boy and for that I'm thankful.

Summer night adventures

Woohoo for a family night out at Sackett's Lake.

I'm so thankful for this loving husband and daddy!

Lovin' the swing

Ataly's turn

We ended the night with a canoe ride.
Some friends from church, who live just across the way from the public beach, have graciously opened the invitation for us to use their kayaks, canoe, pedal boat, etc. anytime. It was the perfect night for our first family canoe ride. Such a calm and peaceful summer night.

Grandparent's love

It was a blessing that my Mom, Grandma Jo, and Dad were able to come into town to love on the kiddos, so Luke and I could be free to love on the Jace and Lacey for the weekend without having to be on the clock with a sitter. Plus, you just can't beat a grandparent's love!

Nonnie french braided Ataly's hair...Ataly felt like a princess.

Grandpa Bruce and Ataly chatting away all snuggled up in the chair

Traeger really enjoyed playing cribbage and dominoes with Great Grandma Jo

Wedding Bells

This weekend we had the privilege of being a part of our first youth group kid's wedding. Luke performed the ceremony and I was honored to share God's word. God is doing such a good thing in Jace and Lacey's lives. It's fun to sit on the sidelines and watch God do His thing.

Sharing in the joys of the rehearsal...

Ready for the big day!

Family photo op

Praying God's blessings for Mr. and Mrs. Klimeck
as they adventure into the wonderful world of marriage.

Swimming lessons

Traeger loved his first ever swimming lessons.
His favorites were doing bobs, getting splashed, playing the games, practicing floats

and getting to do lessons with his new friend T.
T is a new friend who recently was adopted from China.
He gets that "world" because of his special cousin Melia.
We tracked T's journey home on their family's blog and prayed for her. Every chance Traeger got, he made it a point to help T out and sit right next to her.

and last but not least he thought the world of his new buddy/instructor Nick.

Meeting a new friend

Our dear friends, the Smith family, welcomed
Lucy Evelyn
into the world on July 19th.
It was such a treat to go visit Lucy and her beautiful mommy.

Lots of snuggles and kisses were in order

Just can't get enough :O)

Psalm 139:13-16
"You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother's womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous--how well I know it. You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb. You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. "

Sleepover

We enjoyed a spur of the moment sleepover with the K kiddos.

The girls pumped about their sleeping quarters.

The boys feeling satisfied with their set up...

then it was time to crash...good night sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite!

Summer adventures

We loaded up the car and headed north to a new to us destination....the Mondeaux Dam.

Ataly buckled up in her swimsuit and shades ready for our adventure.

Traeger second buckled and ready for takeoff.

Carrying the bucket full of water to shore.

Where did my Traeger go?

Two thumbs up for my little fish.

Peel your banana and UMM take a bite!

We finished the family date night with a tasty picnic supper.

Looking back

Traeger and Ataly both came down the other night after baths all wrapped up in their baby towels and I couldn't help but remember back to when they were just babies using those same towels.

Love it!

Traeger: 5 months old

1 1/2 years old

Traeger still wiping himself dry with his towel at age 5

Ataly: 3 1/2 months old

Filling out the baby towel at age 3

A pit stop

My sister and her kiddos made an overnight pit stop here on their way through to pick up their big brother from CFS on Saturday morning.

The girls glancing at one another wondering what they've gotten themselves into.

Ataly hardly able to contain her excitement when she learned that Auntie Cori bought her her very own pink nail polish and was going to indulge her in her first ever pedicure.

Intently watching Auntie Cori add a splash of pink to her piggies.

Melia accomplished her task of keeping Ataly's foot still.

Ataly is so thankful for her newly painted pink piggies.

As soon as her daddy arrived home it was the first news that was shared. "Look Daddy I'm beautiful because I have pink toes." Can this really start at age 3?! Not exactly the message I wanted her to walk away with, but it afforded us the opportunity to talk about her beauty is not valued in the clothes she wears, the look of her hair, or color of her toes...it's the intricate and marvelous ways God has created her that makes her beautiful!

Psalm 139:14
" I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your workmanship is marvelous."

4th of July festivites

We headed back home for the 4th of July festivites....

Our first stop was the Fisk fireworks on July 3rd.

Luke, Traeger and Ataly playing Magic Carpet with some friends.

Silly girl closed her eyes on purpose...

and thought it was hilarious...

That's more like it.

Family fun at the fireworks.

Big squeezes!

"Say cheese"

***

As tradition would have it the boys joined Nonnie and Grandpa Bruce on their church's VBS float while the rest of us watch from the sidelines.

There's double trouble :O)

Kieran, Traeger and Grandpa Bruce waving at the crowds.

There's Nonnie and Breck...

and Traeger again who finally spotted us.

The trio... minus G who was at CFS for the week.

Chowing down on a hot dog and sweet corn....the simple joys of summer!

More time to chow down!

B (with Luke's help) choreographed a fireworks show.
Unfortunately, some of us chose to view from inside to save ourselves from being carried away by the mosquitos.
